Orthodontics for Children
August 2014
The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that a child undergo an orthodontic assessment at the age of 8 or 10 years of age.
This is the period when the adult teeth commence eruption, and is the best time to do an initial assessment of the development of the teeth and jaws. Early recognition and treatment of problems can prevent more serious complications from developing. Not all problems require early intervention, and your orthodontist is the best person to advise on this matter. The orthodontist will also continue to monitor the development of the adult dentition and will advise on the optimal timing for any treatments.
Early intervention orthodontics is typically used to:
- Guide the correct development of a child’s bite
- Guide the healthy development of a child’s facial profile
- Support the development of a straight, healthy and beautiful smile.
In most cases where early treatment is needed, some further treatment may still be advisable when all the permanent teeth erupt into the mouth. Occasionally, the early treatment is all that is required. Generally, the early corrective treatment would make any further treatment easier and more successful.
At The Look Orthodontists, we are dedicated to ensuring that any early intervention treatment is evidence-based and resourceful, actually going to benefit your child !
