Crossed bites are when the upper and lower teeth do not overlap properly. These can be at the front of the mouth or at the back of the mouth. Obviously, a crossed bite at the front of the mouth is linked to crooked teeth and does not look good. It can also cause wear and tear of the teeth shortening them with time.
A crossed bite at the back of the mouth indicates that there may be a narrow upper jaw, or the upper and lower jaws do not match properly. To correct a crossed bite, sometimes braces alone or an upper jaw expander can be used. Treatment is fairly straightforward. Left untreated, crossed bites at the front and or the back of the mouth can lead to lopsided jaws and teeth. There can also be increased wear and tear on the teeth.
