General Surgery Information

  • Braces are placed for approximately 12 months before surgery. All surgery is carried out under a general anesthetic.
  • All surgery is done from the inside of the mouth.
  • There are no scars on the outside of the mouth after surgery.
  • Surgery aims to separate the jaws like the two sides of a tim tam biscuit. Like a telescope we can then slide the jaw forwards, backwards or side to side.
  • Wisdom teeth are removed at the time of jaw surgery. This means that you do not require surgery again (Which most people do anyway) to have the wisdom teeth removed later in life.
  • The recovery process is astonishingly fast, and by week two most patients have had majority of the swelling subside.
  • Metal plates and screws remain, holding the jaws together during the healing process. Generally, no second surgery is required to remove these.
  • After healing the strength of the jaws back to normal.
  • Sports can be played after 6-8 weeks.
  • No surgery is done on the jaw joints.
  • Braces are off the teeth 6 months after surgery.
  • Total treatment takes approximately 20 months.

How much do braces cost?

Orthodontic treatment costs vary depending on complexity, ranging from $2,900 to $9,600.
For our most common treatment — stainless steel metal braces for upper and lower teeth (including retainers) — the total cost is $8200. Payments are straightforward: pay $410 when the braces are fitted, then $410 per month for 20 months. By the end of your treatment, your new smile (including retainers) is fully paid for — with no hidden costs or surprises.
We provide NO DEPOSIT, INTEREST FREE payment plans to allow you to have the smile you always wanted without emptying your wallet. Our friendly staff will also structure your payment schedule to maximise your health fund rebate.

What will happen at the first visit?

You will meet with one of our experienced specialist orthodontists for a full examination and discussion of your treatment options. If needed, we may arrange X-rays, photos and a 3D scan of your teeth at no additional cost. You will also have the option to return for a free follow-up visit to review and finalise your treatment plan.

How much will it cost to have an initial consultation?

The cost of the initial consultation is $60 and INCLUDES all X-Rays, and photos. Please note that the X-Rays are bulk billed with a valid Medicare card.

Will my teeth straighten our as they grow?

No they will not. The space available for the front teeth does not increase as you grow. If this were to happen, people with straight teeth would end up with gaps between their teeth. Of course this does not occur.

Will braces interfere with sport?

Wearing braces does not interfere with sport. Mouldable mouthguards are available from most pharmacies can be worn over the braces to provide protection. These are highly recommended.

What are retainers?

Retainers are plastic removable plates that are worn after the braces come off to help settle the teeth into a naturally stable position and keep them straight. It is extremely important to wear retainers as directed by your orthodontist or unwanted tooth movement can occur.

Do braces require special care?

Braces are fairly sturdy appliances but will break if treated roughly. You should avoid hard sticky or chewy foods. The general rule is – If you can’t cut it with a knife and fork, don’t eat it. Care and common sense will prevent breakages.

How do you straighten teeth?

Braces have been used for over one hundred years to straighten teeth. Whilst the basic principle remains the same, modern technological advancement has allowed clear braces (ceramic), and gentle wires to be used now.

Invisalign or clear aligner treatment may be another option for suitable patients.

How long will I need to wear braces?

Every person is different. On average most patient’s wear braces for 18 to 24 months.

For more simple problems it may be much less.

Why is orthodontic treatment important?

Straight teeth as a result of orthodontic treatment makes us feel good about our appearance. The improvement in confidence and self-esteem as a result of orthodontic treatment is a great advantage. Research has shown that better smiles directly translate to better jobs, pay, relationships, and a happier life.

When should orthodontic treatment be started?

Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age.

We strongly recommend that the first consultation is at about 7 or 8 years of age. This allows any simple intervention to be made early to ensure that when your child is ready for braces treatment, it is kept as simple and straightforward as possible with best results for the long term.

A growing number of adults are also seeking orthodontic treatment for more youthful smiles later in life. There is no age restriction for orthodontic treatment and various options are available to suit your lifestyle and budget.

How do I know if I may need Orthodontics?

  1. You don’t like the look of your smile.
  2. Your teeth are crooked.
  3. You have gaps between your teeth.
  4. Your upper and or lower teeth stick out.
  5. Your upper and lower front teeth cannot touch each other when the back teeth bite together.
  6. Your teeth show signs of wear.
  7. You have difficult chewing.
  8. You don’t like the look of your jaws.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics means “to move teeth”. We use braces and other modern appliances to straighten your smile.

How often will I have appointments?

Adjustment appointments are every 6-8 weeks. Sometimes they may be around 4 weeks.

Do I need to see my general dentist during orthodontic treatment?

Yes. We recommend that you see your dentist for a complete checkup before, during and after your orthodontic treatment as per your normal 6 monthly or 12 monthly routine. They will deal specifically with your general dental needs.

Retainers

What about wisdom teeth?

Your final X-rays will give an indication of your options for the wisdom teeth. Each patient is individual, and your orthodontist will advise as to your options. These are usually looked at in the years ahead as required.

Should I visit my dentist now?

If you have not seen your General Dentist recently, it is highly recommended to do so for a thorough check-up and cleaning of the gums.

How do I care of the retainers ?

Do not play with the retainers in your mouth, do not eat or bite anything hard sticky or chewy as this may damage or break the wires.

How do I clean retainers?

You can brush the with a toothbrush and toothpaste when you brush your teeth. You can also soak your plates in any cleaning solution from the pharmacy, Alternatively a small amount of diluted white vinegar does the same job. Soak for 10-15 minutes.

I have a fixed retainer. How long will this stay on the teeth ?

A fixed retainer stays on the teeth indefinitely. If it ever comes off or is damaged a new retainer is strongly recommended. As long as you maintain good oral hygiene, a fixed retainer will not affect the health of your teeth.

When I remove the retainers, where should I put them?

Please take care of your retainers!Do not put them in your pocket. Do not put them in your bag. And definitely do not wrap them in tissues or serviettes—they almost always get thrown away! Lost or damaged retainers will need to be replaced at an additional cost ($250 - $450), so please keep them safe in their case at all times.

They feel funny, how long will this last ?

Your retainers will look, taste and feel brand new. Your speech may also be affected. This usually lasts for a couple of days until you wear them in and they become comfortable. Talk, sing, smile as much as possible. If you are having difficulty, discuss this with your orthodontist at your first check appointment.

How much do I need to wear the retainers?

Depending on the individual case, removable retainer wear can be either full-time or part-time.  Your orthodontist will advise you which is most appropriate for your specific requirements. If worn full-time they should only be removed for eating, brushing or when playing contact sports. Typically, retainers are usually worn full-time for approximately 6 months, then bedtime only. After this they may be worn part-time according to your orthodontists’ instructions.

Why do I need to wear retainers ?

like any part of the human body, the ageing process is inevitable. This will have an impact on the teeth. Retainers need to be worn in order to minimise these changes as much as possible. Retainers also help to stabilise your teeth in their new position and it is important to follow these instructions carefully.

Clear Braces

Are there Disadvantages?

Clear braces are prone to appear stained. They are also more brittle and can break or chip easily. The performance of Clear braces is also not optimal and on average cases can take 3-6 months longer with clear braces.

Do Clear/Ceramic Braces cost more?

There is a small premium for ICE Clear Ceramic Braces.

Can I have ceramic braces on my top and bottom rows of teeth?

We usually put clear ceramic braces on the top six front smiling teeth. The rest are in metal. We find this is the best combination of looks and function. Although it is possible to place ICE Clear Ceramic Braces on the lower teeth, any rubbing of the upper teeth against them can cause damage and wear and tear to not only the brace but also the tooth.
